Morehead - a Regional Center for the Arts

Rowan County and Cave Run Lake

Morehead is known as a center for activities in the arts in Northeast Kentucky.  On this page we'll look at some of the opportunities.

Morehead has an active local theater group. Among the projects currently underway is a production "Murder on Divide Hill" (mystery theater) done in conjunction with other local civic organizations. More about this project will appear on the web page at a later time.
Plans for renovation of Morehead's old Courthouse and conversion into a center for the arts include a second-floor stage where dramatic presentations can take place.

Clearing land for the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music to be built on First Street is currently under way.  Visitors will have an opportunity to learn about bluegrass and folk and othr forms of traditional music. The Center will be within a few dozen yards of the Kentucky Folk Art Center, allowing patrons a chance to stroll between the two.

A Hop is held fourth Fridays in Morehead so that people may go from Gallery to Gallery and also to places which have antiques and collectibles. The hours are 5 to 8, and the event often involves refreshments and sometimes music. To participate look for the posters listing Hop locations throughout the downtown area.

Visitors to Morehead will want to visit its Folk Art Museum - one of the extras which have come to us from being the site of Morehead State University. They will find many displays of work by self-taught artists from the region, as well as a small gift shop.
Local art organizations Morehead Art Guild and Cave Run Arts Association hold frequent events attended by the local community and visitors. A regional art exhibit sponsored by Morehead Art Guild will take place in November which will include two-dimensional works, sculpture, folk art and photography. This Show, held annually for many years, draws artists from many counties as well as a few out of state entries.
Cave Run Arts Association has held many recent workshops and several exhibits, and includes both professional and non-professional artists.
The exhibits are generally held in the downtown area and include both one and two dimensional work with a wide variety of styles and influences.
A photography club, Photos in Common, was formed in 2003. At last count dozens of local photographers have joined. Photos in Common members' work can currently be seen at the Courtyard in Flemingsburg.
